I see NCSSSMST as an organization that can bring resources to its members’ schools to help them meet the constantly changing world of math, science and technology in the 21 century. As STEM schools, our role should involve helping to shape governmental policies that will benefit all schools nation wide.
I would like to see NCSSSMST help provide linkages to industry and institutions of higher learning to improve curriculum and instruction in our members’ schools.

X Director (three-year term)
School: North Carolina School of Science & Mathematics
What is your vision regarding how NCSSSMST can further the job of transforming teaching and learning in mathematics, science, and technology? NCSSSMST must continue to be a visionary organization which remains on the cutting edge of educational innovation in science, mathematics and technology. We must continue to establish collaborative efforts that ensure that communities throughout our country are advantaged by the programs, curricula, pedagogy and professional development that result from consortium initiatives. It is also important to continue to focus attention on the value of under- represented minority students, teachers, administrators and professionals in the fields of science, math and technology. With the development of programs that help cultivate interest in these areas amongst African American, Hispanic and Native American youth at an early age, consortium schools can serve as a catalyst impacting policy and policy makers for the 21st century. Doing so would help to counter the anticipated “brain drain” from the US to other countries while continuing to strengthen communities and schools that serve under-represented youth.
What strengths do you bring to the NCSSSMST Board? My passion for education and the profound difference it can make in eradicating poverty in the communities we serve. As Director of Admissions with the NC School of Science and Mathematics I work in a collaborative manner with my staff, the NCSSM campus community and the statewide community as a whole. As a member of ACAR (Annual Conference of Admissions Representatives), which is made up of consortium schools, I often serve in a lead role as one of the founding member institutions for the conference. I am a team player willing to serve in any capacity that allows for successful completion of a project. I also bring my training in sensitivity awareness, diversity training and bias in testing/education from my years of work in the psychometric field directing state assessment projects for school systems across the country. My educational background in communications, marketing, counseling and public administration allows me to work well with diverse groups of people in a manner that is inclusive, empowering and proactive.

__x__Director (three-year term)
School: Alabama School of Mathematics & Science (ASMS), Mobile, AL
What is your vision regarding how NCSSSMST can further the job of transforming teaching and learning in Mathematics, Science and Technology.
The students who excel in Mathematics, Science and Technology oftentimes have limited opportunities to be challenged and elevated to their true potential. The Consortium should create, facilitate and support the academic environment of both members and non-members so that students are given a chance to apply their knowledge to the highest level. Working through opportunities provided by the Consortium, students are then able to expand their horizons when their schools work in conjunction with colleges and universities around them. Student centered research programs run by university faculty give these students the opportunity to tackle real life problems. We must encourage member teachers in every way we can to build the partnership with those high caliber faculties.
What strengths do you bring to the NCSSSMST:
Changing the direction of my career as an university professor, I joined ASMS (a full residential school) as an inaugural faculty member in 1991. Since then, I have been involved in many challenges in the school. I have had the sole responsibility for developing the full spectrum physics program which is currently offered at ASMS. We have three full time faculty members who hold Ph Ds in physics and who are involved not only in teaching, but also engaged in research. Experiences I have gained during the past 16 years at this campus in many different areas will definitely help me to be a good team player with the other Consortium members. I believe that any and every person can be a productive person with ‘just what they have’ if they utilize their resources and education wisely. I am skilled in muti-tasking. Over the course of the past several years this has been developed as I balanced a full time teaching during career at ASMS while organizing out-reach activities and coordinating statewide two Science Bowl competitions for High Schools and Middle Schools in conjunction with the Department of Energy.
